Inclusive Education Coordinator

CONTRACT POSITION SUMMARY:

The Inclusive Education Coordinator, under the direction of the Program Manager will primarily be responsible for planning, implementing and supervising activities to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual and social needs of the student(s) in the Early Learning – Early Childhood Educational Services in accordance with all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures, to work in cooperation with the Early Learning Teachers, staff and caregivers. The Inclusive Education Coordinator, shall plan, organize and implement an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify the needs of assigned students through formal and informal assessments

  • Coordinate with teaching staff on delivery of assessments, track completion of each student, provide data on pre and post scores

  • Assist parents with understanding and supporting educational objectives, learning expectations and behavioral standards

  • Review referral data, history and assessment data to develop appropriate goals and objectives for each student

  • Confer with teachers regarding the educational, social, emotional and physical needs and objectives of each student

  • Refer students identified for formal assessment through Children’s Allied Health Services, and/or related professional agency (Alberta Health, Key Connections etc.)

  • Collaborate and consult with general school personnel regarding the implementation of the IEPs and Early Childhood Educational Services 

  • Collaborate with the Early Learning team, parents and support to arrange and coordinate Individual Educational Plan’s

  • Schedule and prepare follow up meetings, be prepared and attend all IEP’s

  • Review IEP’s with parents, school administrators and general education teachers

  • Develop and implement necessary interventions and strategies to promote achievement of student objectives, coordinate services through classroom EA’s and teacher

  • Monitor, evaluate, and document each student’s progress utilizing appropriate measurements, assessment, and reports

  • Maintain regular communication with parents/guardians by means of email, phone calls, conferences, and progress reports

  • Ensure adherence to reasonable rules of classroom discipline and order to maintain a secure and effective learning environment

  • Manage student behavior through monitoring, supervising, and assessing behavioral patterns

  • Develop and implement Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIPs), where necessary

  • Maintain a current knowledge of inclusive education best practices and trends

  • Provide programs and activities that are developmentally appropriate, incorporating goals and strategies as outlined in the individual program plan

  • Maintain a welcoming, safe and healthy environment for the students and their guardians/parent

  • Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conference, and teacher training workshops

  • Ensure that all equipment within the facility, as well as the facility itself, is clean, well maintained and safe at all times

  • Attend meetings and workshops to develop and discuss new teaching methods

  • Develop and maintain current, accurate and confidential student files

  • Be familiar with all Opokaa’sin emergency procedures

 

REPORTING LINE: Accountable to the Program Director

RATE OF PAY: Based on education and experience.  

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Daily interaction with students, teachers, administration, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel under all circumstances

  • Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting and supporting the student(s).

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education with a consideration in special education

  • 1 year of experience in special education

  • Ability and experience working with Aboriginal children

  • Awareness and understanding of Aboriginal culture, language and issues

  • Excellent and demonstrated organizational and management skills

  • Criminal background check with Vulnerable Sector  - 3 month current

  • Child Welfare Intervention Check – 3 month current

  • First Aid Certification
