North Star  Parent Navigator

POSITION SUMMARY:

The North Star program is a strength-based program that focuses on building social connections and natural network supports among Indigenous parents. It is a tiered program (universal, targeted and intensive) with a focus on connecting families. This position includes the delivery of the Tsaami Piik (Welcoming  Program) to purposefully greet and welcome families into our HUB/programs/services, Kinship Program (providing support to kinship caregivers who are raising extended family members), individual support for parents/caregivers requiring more intensive services (case management), and the coordination of a family/caregiver education program. Through an Indigenous, strength-based lens, the Parent Navigator will assist our parents to negotiation social capital, develop natural networks of support and increase their skills and capacity to navigate programs and services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Tsaami Piik (Welcoming Program) – Universal Program

    • Provide an intake/welcoming process to purposefully welcome families referred through the Indigenous HUB process.

    • Facilitate the implementation of the Family Resource Network Communication Plan, which will include a newsletter, the use of social media…

    • Promote the family/caregiver education program among all families.

    • Target: 100 or more families each fiscal year

  • Coordinate a family/caregiver education program – Targeted Program

    • In collaboration with the HUB coordinator, develop a yearly family/caregiver education program for the school year (Fall/Winter and Spring sessions) and the summer. The program will include among others:

      • Triple P seminars (4-6 weeks)

      • Traditional parenting seminars (based on a set curriculum)

      • Skills development workshops (cooking, shopping, financial literacy, housing and tenancy, health…)

      • Language and culture

    • Identify and invite resource persons and educators to deliver the education sessions/workshops.

    • Recruit families to participate in classes and workshops.

    • Participate in intake and screening of families as directed by HUB coordinator.

    • Facilitate and coordinate parenting classes and workshops.

    • Participate in monitoring and evaluation and reporting activities, such as: 

      • Maintaining documentation about the activities and attendance

      • Prepare monthly nominals.

      • Administer occasional surveys

    • Target: 

      • On average, Opokaa’sin will offer two workshops/training opportunities per week during the school year.

      • The program will reach at least 50 unique families each fiscal year.

  • Provide one-on-one interventions with families/caregivers who require intensive supports

    • Identify, offer formal screening and intake of families requiring one-on-one support

    • Provide case management services to these families, by offering one or more of the following services:

      • Referral to Opokaa’sin family/caregiver education program (parenting classes and services)

      • Navigation and referral to the FRN Spokes and other community services

      • Access to Kinship program that is culturally focused, through one-on-one support and twice-yearly support group

      • Triple P Level 3 workshops for families requiring intensive support

    • Participate in monitoring and evaluation and reporting activities, such as: 

      • Develop and maintain client files (case management)

      • Prepare monthly nominals.

      • Administer occasional surveys

    • Target: the program will reach at least 30 unique families each fiscal year.

  • Other responsibilities

    • Be familiar with and abide by policies set forth by the agency

    • Must maintain confidentiality at all times.

    • Participate in professional development activities as assigned.

    • In partnership with the HUB Coordinator,

      • Promote programs and services to community.

      • To establish and maintain working relationships with other community agencies

      • To coordinate services with existing services Opokaa’sin provider

 

REPORTING LINE: Accountable to the Indigenous HUB Coordinator

Rate of Pay: $25.00 - $30.00/hour, based on education and experience.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A University or College Diploma, preferably in Social Work, Psychology and/or Human Services.

  • A Social Work designation an asset

  • Facilitation skills

  • Experience with Indigenous families

  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written

  • Highly organized

  • Effective time management skills

  • Effective facilitation skills

  • Excellent inter-personal relation skills

  • Good computer skills

  • High level of personal integrity

  • Strong work ethic

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Self-starter

  • Demonstrated commitment to Health & Safety

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • Travel may be required

  • Flexible working hours, may require some evenings and weekends.

  • Overtime as required

  • During COVID-19, will be required to adjust work conditions

 

OTHER:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.

  • Must undergo a Child Welfare and Criminal Record check (vulnerable sector).
